The team from the nation’s Capital came into this match with two draws in MLS competition, and a cupset loss against One Knoxville SC. NYCFC headed into this match with a loss against CF Montreal and a U.S. Open Cup win against their New York rivals the New York Redbulls.
The two sides started the match on a strong footing, as NYCFC’s Augustin Ojeda’s effort early set the tone for New York, and D.C. ‘s Brandon Servania forced goalkeeper Matt Freese to make an acrobatic save. Louis Munteanu put D.C. United up in the 29th minute and that would be doubled in the 74th minute as Munteanu slotted a penalty into the bottom-right corner.
New York City will go on to face Columbus at Yankee Stadium and will be looking to regain some footing in the MLS standings as they now sit 9th in the Eastern Conference standings.
